Two key recommendations from the GESAMP report (2019) are the establishment of a comprehensive assessment framework for marine CDR and the development of a guidance document to elicit assessment criteria for marine CDR. ASMASYS is addressing these recommendations by developing a framework in Phase I and then refining and expanding it in Phase II. The holistic assessment framework integrates indicators of environmental impact, benefits, risks, and scalability, while also considering legal, political, societal, economic, and ethical dimensions. Building on the foundation laid in the 1.5°C Special Report (IPCC 2018), ASMASYS II aims to enhance these criteria further and adapt them to the evolving landscape of marine CDR research and policy, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of its feasibility and potential.
