Objectives
The ASMASYS project aims to provide a comprehensive, interdisciplinary evaluation of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) options. This initiative involves engaging representatives from relevant stakeholder groups and focuses primarily on CO₂ removal options, as opposed to CO2 emissions avoidance. The key objectives of ASMASYS are as follows:
- Development of mCDR Implementation Scenarios
Create diverse scenarios for mCDR implementation in Germany by integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches, with active collaboration from all CDRmare consortia and external stakeholders. - Expansion of the Assessment Framework
Enhance the existing assessment framework to facilitate a standardized yet context-specific evaluation of relevant mCDR scenarios. A central goal is the systematic application and integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the framework. - Application of the Assessment Framework
Utilize the refined assessment framework to evaluate the developed mCDR implementation scenarios, ensuring thorough analysis and understanding of their implications. - Integration of Social Sciences and Humanities
Foster collaboration within the Social Sciences and Humanities Hub to address cross-methodological issues related to mCDR scenarios. This will involve incorporating both disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives to enrich the evaluation process. - Synthesis of Research Results
Conduct all tasks through workshops that involve all CDRmare consortia, ensuring that the evaluation process synthesizes the diverse research results generated across the research mission CDRmare. This synthesis will significantly enhance the knowledge base available for societal and political decision-making. - Responsive Research Structure
Maintain a responsive structure where collaborating scientists address questions arising from both method-specific projects and policy and regulatory domains through regularly held expert workshops. Additionally, researchers will independently explore societal and humanities aspects of mCDR, which are currently relevant in national, regional (especially within the EU), and global discussions.
Through these objectives, ASMASYS aims to contribute to the effective evaluation and implementation of marine CDR options, ultimately supporting efforts toward achieving greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany.
