Experts in ASMASYS

These scientists contribute with their expertise to design an assessment framework for decision makers.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

Dr. Nadine Mengis

is the co-speaker of the CDRmare research mission and the coordinator of ASMASYS. As a climate physicist and Earth system modeler, Nadine brings experience in the creation and application of assessment frameworks for carbon removal measures, as well as expertise in the context of our remaining CO2 emission budgets to the project. Nadine leads her Emmy Noether group FOOTPRINTS, which conducts research on various aspects of achieving temperature stabilization.

Kiel University (CAU) – Department of Philosophy

JProf. Dr. Christian Baatz

is the coordinator of ASMASYS and junior professor specializing in climate ethics, sustainability, and global justice. His current research focuses on systematically and transparently evaluating various options for addressing climate change and its impacts. He also leads a BMBF junior research group that explores how international funds for climate adaptation are allocated and how to make this distribution more equitable.

University of Hamburg – Faculty of Law

Prof. Dr. Alexander Proelß

Kiel University (CAU) – Walter Schücking Institute for International Law

Prof. Dr. Nele Matz-Lück

is professor for international law and the law of the sea at Kiel University. She lectures and publishes regularly on the sustainable use of marine resources and the protection of the marine environment. She is involved in ASMASYS as a PI for the WP on the establishment of an assessment framework and the identification of knowledge gaps. Her working group’s research focuses upon the legal frameworks for CDR technologies.

Leipzig University – Faculty of Economic Sciences

Jun.-Prof. Dr. Martin Hänsel

is an environmental and climate economists and junior professor in Nature’s Values at the Institute for Infrastructure and Resource Management of the Faculty of Economics and Management Science of Leipzig University. Within ASMASYS II, Martin is PI for the sub-project on the economic assessment of marine CDR measures. A central focus is the development of an integrated economic assessment model that considers the interlinkages between marine CDR measures and the provision of marine ecosystem services for human well-being.

Kiel University (CAU) – Department of Philosophy

Dr. Lukas Tank

is a postdoctoral researcher in philosophy working on ethical and justice-theoretical issues surrounding the marine deployment of CDR. He completed his PhD on the ethics of CO2 pricing, and subsequently conducted research on the moral implications of the fact that climate change is already costing human lives.

Kiel University (CAU) – Department of Philosophy

Dr. Lieske Voget-Kleschin

Kiel University (CAU) – Walter Schücking Institute for International Law

Dr. Tony Cabus

As a postdoctoral researcher, Tony is working on the legal feasibility of CDR options under international, European, and German law.

German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP)

Dr. Miranda Böttcher

As a postdoctoral researcher with a background in political science and environmental policy, Miranda is working on assessing the political and institutional feasibility of marine CO2 removal methods in the context of German and EU climate policy.

Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

Dr. Jessica Strefler

Leipzig University – Faculty of Economic Sciences

Dr. Julian Sagebiel

is an environmental economist specializing in the economic valuation of non-marketable goods and services, including a significant portion of the services provided by nature. Within ASMASYS, he is conducting a meta-analysis on the value of marine ecosystem services. The findings will be used to highlight the (welfare-relevant) effects of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) on nature and ecosystem services and to integrate them into an economic valuation model. Julian works as a research associate at the Junior Professorship for the Valorization of Nature at the Institute for Infrastructure and Resource Management in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Leipzig.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

Dr. Makcim De Sisto

As a postdoctoral researcher, Makcim is working on the quantification of assessment frameworks for CDR options, including the identification of exclusion criteria or “red flags”

University of Hamburg – Faculty of Law

Dr. Robert Steenkamp

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel

Judith Matz

As a doctoral researcher and expert in macro-algae methodology, Judith will add selected blueCDR scenarios to the CO2 removal options presented in CDRmare, aligning them with the “10 Mt CO2/year removal challenge.” She enjoys working across both natural and social sciences and is interested in networking, citizen science, ships of opportunity, science and technology transfer, monitoring and evaluating measures, and carbon credits.

Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)

Verena Hofbauer

Leipzig University – Faculty of Economic Sciences

Malin Wiese

With a background in economics, Malin is a PhD researcher working on an economic assessment model for marine CO2 removal options. The integrated modeling framework considers the interactions between the atmosphere and the biosphere to study the role of the ocean in the climate system and trade-offs with marine ecosystem services.
